The Marquis and I feed the little birds in our garden. The tits and sparrows and dunnocks and finches and cock robin, of course. We also feed the slightly larger birds, like collared doves and woodpigeons (less deliberately...) and that famous mammalian bird, the grey squirrel.

Today we've had a bit of escalation, as the original intended recipients of said food, turned a part of the menu: it appears we are now also providing for a sparrowhawk...

A huge big welcome then to my sister, [livejournal.com profile] tuemi (formerly known as Ta'Nik).

Nachdem ich jetzt zumindest eine deutschsprachige Leserin habe schreibe ich auch ab und zu mal was auf deutsch.

Had a very long weekend -- Society T seminar, more seagull rescue (with a happy end, thank goodness), Shrek 2 (very funny).

Tidied out the loft today: lots of cardboard boxes...

Longer update when I feel more human again. ;-)

Well… tonight, [livejournal.com profile] the_marquis and I took our bird-watching to a new level.

A daft little (large, actually) seagull chick from a different family fell off the roof in our neighbourhood a day or so ago, according to our neighbour Mrs Hamish. Tonight, as the Marquis went to “quickly” empty the bin, he spotted Chick bang in the middle of the road. Now we don’t have much traffic where we are, but we do have many cats in the neighbourhood.

Chick looked bedraggled and slightly beaten up, and made pathetic little noises, and the Marquis and I decided that something had to be done. Mrs Hamish agreed and wished us luck, but decided not to help, as her two dogs were clearly upsetting Chick’s parents who were yelling and cursing us.

RSPCA suggest that juvenile wild birds should generally just be left alone, because the parents will continue to feed them on the ground, but that it might be advisable to move them to a sheltered place if they are in exposed area. Well, in my book bang in the middle of the road counts as exposed.

The Marquis manoeuvred Chick into the carport, while I went to find out what to do. But apart from what the RSPCA had to say, there wasn’t much I could track down in a hurry. So I came back downstairs with the camera (in the end we didn’t take any pictures, even though it would have been nice to have one, because Chick was scared enough without the flash going off…). We decided that we’d get Chick into a cardboard box and put him on the roof in front of our house – better than nothing, and all we could do.

In the end it was quite an undertaking to persuade a large babybird with no clue whatsoever to get into the Cardboard Box of Salvation. After trying to persuade Chick into it (which resulted in much shrieking and the Marquis nearly treading on Chick’s toes), the Marquis simply plonked the box over the top of Chick. There was a stunned silence.

With the aid of a piece of hardboard, the Marquis closed the box, while I fetched the loft-ladder and put it up against the outside of the house. The Marquis then acrobatically climbed up it with the box with Chick in his arms. He got Chick out of the box and it immediately climbed up the slope towards the ridgeline.

We’ll see tomorrow if Chick’s still there. The big gulls seem to have stopped shrieking for the moment. Hopefully that is a good sign.

The other baby gull on the car park roof who recently lost its sibling is up an about again. So fingers crossed for it, too.

May our daft oversized pigeons live to learn to fly yet!

After work on Mondays, the Marquis and I sometimes like to go and play badminton. Today, however, nobody else wanted to go. So we decided just to have a wee practice together. Except that the court hadn't been book, or so it turned out. So we wandered home.

There, the Marquis sorted out light brackets for our new bikes, and after a quick dinner, we cycled to the gym to get to our Pilates class, only to find that it had been cancelled. Hm...

Seeing as we suddenly had a lot of time to go and play in, we decided to inaugurate the bicycles. The weather was lovely, sunny and not too windy and what with it being the longest day of the year we didn't need our lights at all. We did a fair bit of cycling on some quiet back roads and then went off road and along the river, first in one direction, then across a bridge and back the other way to take us back towards home.

It was a really nice ride, but I hadn't cycled in so long, I kept worrying about losing my balance and falling over. At one point, when I was trying to cycle up a bank, I started to slide back down the hill, which was somewhat disconcerting, but luckily I managed to stop nettle-covered disaster in its tracks. :-) The Marquis roared like a drain as I waddled up the slope, pushing the bicycle between my legs.

But now, safely back at home, my buttocks hurt. I don't even what to think about how they'll feel tomorrow...

In other news, we bought a pair of binoculars at Aldi on Saturday -- they were only £7. I'm really pleased with them, because now I can actually see the seagull chick on the corrugated roof across from our house. They are very cute grey fluffy things.

Now I just need to get in the habit of dragging the bins around with me, in case I see that raven again that has been hanging around our area.

Have a happy solstice (as [livejournal.com profile] jane_somebody puts it...)

Ducklings

On the little stream you need to cross to get into the estate where our house is tucked away there is a duck with six tiny little ducklings... They are extremely cute. Brown and yellow little fluffballs that go hydrofoiling after mum when she's too far away downstream.

Seeing them this morning was a really nice treat!

It turns out you can train Cuban crocodiles much in the same way you can train a dog. The dragon in me is pleased with this discovery. But crocs are probably a bit more dangerous than dogs nevertheless.
